Week 12: Contemporary Manga

For this week I read silver spoon. I must say at first reading it I really didn't like it because it had a-lot of the same tropes of other animes and mangas. About the boy in a fish out of water situation. I found it quite boring because it didn't appeal to me either and the style is not my taste. I also didn't care about agriculture so there was nothing to really latch me onto the read. However, as I kept on reading, I was so happy to discover that the way she delivers the content was really interesting.

It was cool to learn more about agriculture and the different ways people upkeep their livelihoods. They all had different methods and ways of doing things and they branched into some interesting conceptual thoughts too. I thought it was cool how it was like a high school setting but agriculture, and there was a part where he had a chicken on the table right while he was eating his food in the canteen. I liked that they talked about how to be a vegetarian and how that affects if they are able to kill the animals or not. These are things we don't usually think about in terms of agriculture and it made me think about the people who work in agriculture too.

Agriculture affects all of us and most of us consume from grocery stores and stuff but I never really think about it on a daily basis. That's why I felt that I enjoyed how as each character we meet goes by I learn a little more and I appreciate a little more. It almost felt like getting to know something where I enjoyed each layer and new thing I learned. It was also cool how there was a part about how the horse had a funeral and when asked if this is common the owner replied with it depends on the owner. And it really does, we all live lives differently and sometimes we think we have to be the same but the truth is we can always do things differently. I thought this was quite powerful as he didn't have to give the horse a funeral but he chose to. Having a choice and making one based on your resolve was beautiful to watch.

I'm glad I read this because it's something I usually wouldn't on my own, because my experience from disliking it to having it grow on me was quite an exciting one I must say. I was aware of how the story on it's own changed my mind and perspective and I feel like that is very powerful and enjoyable on it's own to experience.
